Student Handbook

The North Orange County Community College District and Fullerton College are committed to providing access for students with disabilities to all facets of the college experience.  Such access may be accomplished through the provision of accommodations and/or services which are specifically designed to address disability-related needs.  Examples of services include registration assistance, priority registration, reading services, adaptive equipment use, interpreters, specialized academic counseling, test-taking facilitation, medical parking, and adaptive computer classes.

Services are provided for enrolled students only.  Students wishing to enroll at Fullerton College may apply online at www.fullcoll.edu.  If accommodations are required to complete the matriculation process, visit the DSS Office in Room 840 or call or leave a message at (714) 992-7270 (voice), (714) 992-7221 (TTY).

Once the matriculation process is completed, make an appointment to see a DSS specialist for verification of disability and to make arrangements for support services.  Please bring to this appointment any previous testing or current medical reports that you may have.  Available services will be explained and a support service plan will be devised.

PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO ESTABLISH YOUR STATUS AS AN ACTIVE STUDENT USING DSS.  To do so, bring a copy of your class schedule to DSS at the beginning of each semester.   Failure to do so may prevent you from receiving priority registration as well as other support services.

The following is important information about receiving and using support services through DSS.

***Should you be dissatisfied with the accommodations received through DSS, please refer the "Complaint Resolution Procedures" and the "Complaint Resolution Form".

NOTETAKING ASSISTANCE

Notetaking assistance may be provided in a variety of ways.  Based on the student’s need, a volunteer peer notetaker may be utilized. DSS staff and the instructor of the class can assist in finding a peer notetaker who will take their notes on NCR (carbon copy) paper and provide the student with a copy of the notes. A tape recorder can also be used to tape the class. Other options may be available based on the student’s need.

INTERPRETING SERVICES

Sign language interpreters are provided for hard-of-hearing and deaf students.  Eligibility for interpreting services will be determined by a DSS professional and will be based on verification of disability. To schedule interpreters for your classes, it is important to meet with the Coordinator of Interpreting Services as soon as you are enrolled in classes to complete a request for services form. It is also extremely important to use this service responsibly. Students must notify the Coordinator of Interpreting Services at least 24 hours in advance of an anticipated absence at (714) 992-7000 ext. 25369 (voice relay) or (714) 992-7221 (TTY). Refer to the Interpreting Services Guidelines document for further information.

MEDICAL PARKING

Purchase a student parking sticker at the time of registration.  If you have a DMV placard, you must display both the placard and a student parking sticker. If you do not have a DMV placard, you need to bring your student parking sticker to the Campus Safety Office (Building 1500) along with a medical verification of your disability. They will assign you medical parking and provide you with information regarding where to park on campus.

Please note: Do not park in carpool slots or specially reserved spots.  If you receive medical parking for a temporary disability, you will be required to provide an updated disability verification before another medical sticker can be issued to you.

COMPUTERS

Adaptive computers are available in various locations throughout the campus.  If necessary, some training is available through the Adaptive Computer Lab classes to enhance skills needed to use this specialized equipment. Please refer to the Test Taking Facilitation section of this handbook regarding computer access for exams.

READER SERVICES / ALTERNATE MEDIA

All authorized reader services and alternate media requests will be provided in the order they are received.  It is important to contact DSS staff prior to the start of classes to ensure adequate lead time to process your request. Fill out the appropriate request for services form with the Student Services Specialist.  If training is needed to use any equipment to access the alternate formats, this can be arranged with the DSS staff. If authorization is necessary for an alternate form of a test, several options are available and must be discussed with a DSS Specialist in advance.

REFERRALS FOR TUTORING

Currently, tutoring for DSS and all FC students will be conducted in the Fullerton College Tutoring Center. DSS students may obtain a referral for tutoring from one of their instructors or from one of the Learning Disability Specialists. If a DSS student feels that they have a need beyond what is available to them in the Fullerton College Tutoring Center, s/he may pursue assistance in the Adaptive Computer Lab (see below) where additional help may be provided.

ADAPTIVE COMPUTER LAB CLASSES

Students who are DSS eligible may take these support services classes. Students receive academic and computer assistance which is arranged on an open-entry and individualized basis. Learning Strategies (STSV 75) and/or Word Processing (STSV 71) can be taken for .5 to 2.0 units each and the hours are arranged around the student’s schedule and preference. Please note: These classes are listed under the Student Support Services section of the Fullerton College class schedule. The classes meet in Room 804 (in the Library Learning Resources Center).

0.5 unit     =  1.5 hours per week

1.0 unit     =  3    hours per week

2.0 units   =  6    hours per week

TEST TAKING FACILITATION

For students who have been authorized for test taking accommodations, the following procedure should be utilized:

1.      Provide the instructor (preferably on the first day of class) with a DSS Instructor Letter which explains that you are eligible for services at DSS.

2.      Pick up a Test Taking Facilitation Form from DSS and take it to the class instructor no less than one week before the scheduled test.  The student should fill out the top section of the form and the instructor fills out the bottom section.

3.      A test appointment must be scheduled at least one week in advance. To make an appointment please call (714) 992-7270, or email ABreslin@fullcolll.edu.

4.      The form must be completed and signed by the instructor and returned to DSS along with the testing materials before the date the test will be administered.

5.      Please refer to the document Student Responsibilities for Utilizing Testing Accommodations for instructions related to arranging readers, tests in alternate format, adaptive computers, private testing rooms, or scribes. All arrangements must be made at least one week in advance.

6.      On the test date and time, come to DSS to take the test instead of going to class. Please note: An exception to this is if the instructor lectures before or after the test. In this case, you must make arrangements to take the test before or after the class so you do not miss the lecture. You will need to make these special arrangements with your instructor.

REGISTRATION ASSISTANCE/ACADEMIC COUNSELING

DSS specialists are available for specialized disability-related academic counseling appointments and for registration assistance appointments. Recommendations are made to help you be successful in the classes in which you enroll.

All DSS students are eligible for priority registration. Priority registration means you will register early, thereby increasing your chances of getting the classes that you desire. Help is also available through DSS to assist students in registering online.

PLEASE NOTE:  FAILURE TO USE THESE SUPPORT SERVICES IN A RESPONSIBLE FASHION MAY RESULT IN SUSPENSION OF THE SERVICE.
