Adaptive Computer Lab

The Who and What of the Adaptive Computer Lab

What we do is address our 4 "R’s"

Remediate in all academic areas.

Reinforce what they have learned in their classes.

Recommend alternate strategies.

Re-introduce the students to success at every opportunity.

How a student gets enrolled?

Via WebStar  Registration for STSV 71 or STSV 75

Through a LD Specialist’s recommendation.

Add directly through Paul McKinley.

Who "fits" in? 
A student who:
        - is enrolled at FC and has special needs.
        - is registered with DSS.
        - is capable of successfully completing a non-lab class at FC.

Adaptive Software in the Adaptive Computer Lab

Kurzweil 3000 - Allows user to scan material and reads aloud. Many features for LD students such as Dictionary, Thesaurus, highlighter, note-taking …. Reading stations are available in various locations across the campus.  Scanning stations are also in select locations.

Kurzweil 1000 - Allows user to scan and read documents then software reads materials aloud, preferred the most by Visually Impaired users.

Jaws for Windows - Allows Visually Impaired and Brain Injured users to use keyboard commands to access information by reading the screen aloud to the individual.

Dragon Naturally Speaking - Allows users to make a speech file of their voice commands. Then Dragon listens to their commands, and performs the appropriate keyboard/Mouse operations. Preferred by Mobility Impaired individuals; especially those who have difficulty using the keyboard and or mouse attachments. Also may be used by BI, or LD; who are also MI. Generally, Dragon Naturally Speaking Professional can be utilized by a Visually Impaired individual, if conjunction with Jawbone and Jaws, all three at the same time, and these are all available in our lab.

Zoomtext - Allows Visually Impaired individuals to see enlarged images on their computer screen. Zoomtext Extra Level 2 allows VI individuals to listen to documents in E-text format on the doc reader.

Accessibility Settings/Options - Available in Microsoft Windows, Office and other Programs - Allows changes to the various settings on the screen such as high-contrast, font size, mouse movements, sticky keys, magnification,….
